Why rush?

We are a Social and Professional fraternity with our own house (so we get to make our own house rules!). We get work done, while still doing college right, and truly help each other through the rigor of Viterbi engineering!
Rush gives both you a chance to see if you are a good fit for the house, and the active members to do the same. We are a fairly small house for this reason, members of the house are truly close with each other, and are members because of the personalities we all share.

What do you mean by "Social" fraternity

We put great emphasis on a safe balance of both work and play. You truly aren't living college if your only friends are your textbooks. Sigma Phi Delta members are anything but the "typical" engineer. While we take the same classes, help eachother out with homework, and study together, we also party together. At minimum, social events we hold every semester include but are not limited to:

Pledge Invite
This A themed dance that is all about welcoming SPD pledges. We take a bus with all our dates out to a venue in the LA area. All expenses are paid for by the house, which yields the benefit of booking high profile venues at a lower cost for you!
Most recent venues have included:
  • Newport Beach yacht cruise (pirate invite)
  • Fu's Palace (psychodelic themed)
  • Santa Monica Pier (Nerds and Schoolgirls)
  • Los Angeles Country Club (80's themed)
Registered Parties
Registered parties are parties that require both a guest list and approval by USC. Security is hired, professional DJs/bands, and every party has a theme. Only actives and pledges are allowed to add to the guest list, but the social chair may decide to let in other USC students as well.
Most recent registered parties in the past have included:
  • Top Gun
  • Toga! Toga! Tooogaaa!
  • Area 51 (alien themed)
  • Live Concert for Haiti (was sponsored by Jack FM and helped the victims of Haiti)
  • Many many more!
Room Theme
Room theme is is a chance for the house to invite close friends and have an "Around the World" type party. Everyone who lives in chooses a theme for their room, and guests go from room to room experiencing each! This is a chance for the actives and pledges to show off their creativity, and provides for a great, often hilarious time with close friends of the house.
Recent rooms have been themed:
  • WWF (World Wrestling Federation for those non Hulksters out there)
  • Strip Club
  • Night Club
  • Winter wonderland
  • Hell
  • St. Patrick's Day
  • Many more that cannot be listed on this site!
B&B's / Thursday night BBQs
Theres a few arguments for what the B's stand for, but basically we invite a sorority over for a night of fun. Every thursday we gather as a house, hang out, and BBQ. Gotta love free food.

Red Rose Formal
Formal is much like invite, only, you guessed it, formal! You and your date dress up and we go to a very nice venue in the Los Angeles area,or sometimes not even that!
Recent venues have included:
  • Luxor Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas NV
  • Shutters Restuarant
  • Cafe del Rey (Michael Keaton, aka Batman, ate dinner at the table next to our formal)
  • The Bonaventure Hotel
  • Many more!
In addition, we participate in a number of philanthropy events as our effort to give back to the community. Our fraternity was founded on Science, Friendship, and Duty, hence SPD. Philanthropy is one way we fulfill our duty to give back.

What do you mean by "Professional" fraternity

While we like to have fun, we all recognize the importance of receiving a fulfilling experience in Viterbi engineering. The Professional aspect of the house can be broken down in two orientations: Academic, and Career

Academic Benefits:
All of our members are in Viterbi, and pretty much the entire house takes the same classes together, or can help each other out with classes the more senior members have already taken. In addition, members save money by sharing textbooks, and our in house library is something only members and pledges can benefit from. Our members graduate at a rate higher than the rest of the school, and we have built strong relationships with Viterbi faculty. Frequently we have Viterbi professors over for Monday Night Dinner, a weekly event where we gather and eat and listen to speakers.
Professional Benefits:
Possibly the most beneficial aspect of being in the house is the career development. Nearly all of our members have engineering jobs while still in school. Now more than ever it is important to begin building experience and resumes. You are encouraged to check out our Alumni Profiles to see what our recent graduates have been up to. Included are testimonies as to how the house helped them succeed. It is common for alumni in management positions to hire from within Alpha Chapter. In today's working world, it is just as important WHO you know, as WHAT you know.
Recent professional events have included:
  • Talks from entrepreneurs regarding engineering and startups
  • Resume review workshops
  • Alumni Panels
  • Alumni mock interviews
  • SPD job fair - an internal recruiting service so alumni can stay aware of active members and their skills
SPD is also member of the Professional Fraternity Council, an organization that throws career development events for all professional fields (Business, law, engineering, medicine ,etc).
What else should I be thinking about?

We've been at USC since 1924 and have been a major part of the Viterbi School of Engineering ever since. We have had the current and past presidents of the Viterbi Student Council and other student leaders and athletes. Our current members and alumni are employed by some of the best employers in the country including Boeing, Northrup Grumman, Chevron, EV3, PCL, Raytheon, Qualcomm, Microsoft, The Aerospace Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, RocketDyne, SpaceX and many more.

In any case, make sure you get involved at USC. Our house has made the most of college, involving ourselves in greek life, student athletics, and various other orgs. Have fun, you have a short time at USC!

Come stop by and see what we're all about!
All events start at 6PM at our house at 30th and university
